About GloFish®

GloFish® fluorescent fish are like any other zebrafish, just with a dazzling color upgrade. They are beautiful, hardy fish, perfect for both beginners and hobbyists. Please note that all GloFish information and images on this website are taken with permission from the GloFish website.

Where do GloFish® fluorescent zebrafish come from?
Each color of GloFish was developed by adding a natural fluorescence gene to a zebrafish egg. The developing fish incorporated the gene and then passed the fluorescent color to its offspring through traditional breeding. Because of this, each line of GloFish originates from a single fish. For example, all of the Starfire Red™GloFish are descended from a single red fluorescent zebrafish.
GloFish® fluorescent zebrafish were originally bred to help detect environmental pollutants. By adding a natural fluorescence gene to the fish, scientists hope to one day quickly and easily determine when a waterway is contaminated. The first step in developing a pollution-detecting fish was to create fish that are fluorescent all the time. Scientists soon realized the public's interest in sharing the benefits of this research. The benefit: GloFish® fluorescent fish.

Where does the fluorescent color come from?
The fluorescence in our fish is produced by a fluorescent protein gene which creates the beautifully colored fluorescent protein that can be seen when looking at the fish. The fluorescent protein genes occur naturally and are derived from marine organisms.

Do you add a fluorescence gene to every fish?
No. GloFish are born with their natural brilliance (not injected) and pass it along to their offspring.

How do GloFish compare to other zebrafish?
GloFish are like any other zebrafish, just with a brighter disposition. This includes everything from general care and temperature preferences to growth and nutritional needs.

What colors do GloFish® fluorescent fish come in?
GloFish come in three striking colors: Starfire Red™, Electric Green™, and Sunburst Orange™.

Do GloFish® actually glow?
No, GloFish® absorb light and then re-emit it. This creates the impression they are glowing, especially under a black light in a dark room. Each GloKit™ includes three light settings: white, blue, and black lights, to maximize and customize the Glo™ effect.

Does the fluorescence harm the fish?
No. GloFish are as healthy as other zebrafish, but they have a brighter disposition.

How do GloFish help fight against pollution?
GloFish were originally bred to help detect environmental pollutants. Scientists are currently working to add a biological "switch" that will cause the always-fluorescing fish to only fluoresce when the water is unsafe. To support this effort, a portion of the proceeds from all GloFish sales goes to the lab where this work is being conducted.

What is so unique about GloFish®?
They're brilliant! Each color of GloFish was developed by adding a natural fluorescence gene to a zebrafish egg. The developing fish incorporated the fluorescence gene and then passed the fluorescent color to its offspring through traditional breeding. Because of this, each line of GloFish originates from a single fish. For example, all of the Starfire Red™ GloFish are descended from a single red fluorescent zebrafish.

Is it hard to care for GloFish?
GloFish are easy to care for since they are like any other zebrafish - just with a brighter disposition. They are also known to be hardy, making them a great fish for any beginner or hobbyist. For more detailed information about GloFish® fluorescent fish, please see www.glofish.com or email info@glofish.com.

GloKit™ Aquarium Setup Instructions

Please note these instructions are also enclosed with each GloKit™

The following step-by-step instructions will guide you through the GloKit™ aquarium setup process. The entire process will take approximately 60 minutes. Read and closely follow these GloSafe™ Setup Instructions in order to ensure that your setup is successful:

1) Carefully remove GloFish® fluorescent fish from the GloKit™ aquarium
Within the tank, you will find a box labeled "GLOFISH® FLUORESCENT FISH". DO NOT OPEN THIS BOX AT THIS TIME. Gently place it to the side and follow the steps below. You may also find a heating or cooling pack in the box. Please discard this.

2) Choose a suitable location for your GloKit™
The location you choose must be level, vibration-free and close to an electric outlet with two available sockets. The surface on which your aquarium will be placed should be sturdy and strong. The aquarium will weigh about 15 pounds with water. Do not place the aquarium in direct sunlight or close to a heating/air conditioning vent, since this will cause unwanted temperature changes in your aquarium.

3) Check aquarium for cracks
We do everything possible to ensure that your aquarium arrives in good shape, but it is possible that the aquarium may be damaged during shipping. If you do find a crack in the aquarium, please contact us right away to arrange for a replacement. While you are waiting for your new aquarium, please use the "GloFish® Life-Liner" as a temporary home for your fish. This can be done by opening the bag, placing it within the aquarium, and then skipping to Step 7, and then Steps 9 - 15.

4) Rinse aquarium equipment and plant decorations
Begin by rinsing your hands to remove any lotions or oils that may harm your fish. Then, carefully and gently extend the light 5-6 inches above the aquarium. Rinse the inside of the aquarium and all plant decorations with plain tap water. Never use soap or other cleaners inside the aquarium, since cleaning agents can leave a residue that will harm your fish. Do not let water come into contact with the lights or other electrical components.

5) Add the plant decorations
Attach the GloKit™ easy-connect plant decorations to the posts at the bottom of the aquarium.

6) Rinse and add gravel
Rinse the gravel that arrived with your GloKit™ to remove any dust. To rinse gravel, use a clean bucket or large bowl. Put gravel into the bucket or bowl and fill with tap water. Use your hand to mix the gravel to remove dust, and then pour out the water. Repeat until the water is clear, and then pour the gravel into aquarium and spread it around the base of the plant decorations.

7) Fill your aquarium with water
If available, we recommend using bottled spring water at room temperature. If this is not available, you may add lukewarm tap water. In either case, add water until the water level is approximately ONE INCH below the top rim of the frame. IMPORTANT: If you are not using spring water, add 1/4 of the included AquaSafe® to neutralize chlorine and condition the water for the fish. The AquaSafe® can be found along with the food inside the TetraCare packet. Save the other 3/4 of the Aquasafe® package for future water conditioning.

8) Install filter
Install the Whisper 3i filter, check valve, cartridge and air pump according to the filter directions that are included in the box. Please also refer to the safety instructions that are included with the filter. IMPORTANT: The filter must be installed so that the water stream that comes into the aquarium from the top of the filter is ONE-HALF INCH ABOVE the water level. This is very important to prevent the fish from swimming into the filter.

9) Set-up Aquarium Light
Affix the light cover (this is a small, clear plastic piece) to the light housing unit to help prevent water from getting onto the lights. Then, attach the light source power cord to the rear of the tank. The lights may now be turned on. Please note that this light should not be left on continuously, as fish need alternating periods of light and dark.

10) Remove the GloFish® from their shipping box
Carefully open the shipping box and remove the plastic bag (inside the box) containing the GloFish. PLEASE DO NOT OPEN THE BAG CONTAINING THE GLOFISH.

11) Float the GloFish in the tank
Remove the GloFish bag from their box and gently place the bag inside the aquarium. PLEASE DO NOT OPEN THE BAG CONTAINING THE GLOFISH. It is critical not to open the bag until after the shipping water has had time to match the aquarium water temperature. If opened prematurely, the water will quickly lose dissolved oxygen, causing possible fish suffocation.

12) STOP & WAIT 30 MINUTES
Please STOP and wait 30 minutes. This is very important because this time will allow the water in the bag to match the aquarium water temperature. If you added the AquaSafe®, this time will also allow it to neutralize chlorine and condition the water for the fish. Once you have waited 30 minutes after completing Step 10, you are ready to add your GloFish® fluorescent fish to the aquarium by following instructions 13-16. PLEASE FOLLOW THESE GLOSAFE™ SETUP INSTRUCTIONS PRECISELY TO ENSURE SAFE INTRODUCTION OF YOUR FISH.

13) Opening the bag
Carefully cut off the top of the shipping bag as closely as possible to the steel clip. Roll back the edges of the plastic to create a ring around the bag, which will help it to float in the water. Continue floating the now-open bag.

14) Adding water to the bag
Add 1/2 cup (1/8 of liter) of aquarium water into the bag and wait 15 minutes.

15) Continue adding water
Add 1 cup (1/4 of a liter) of aquarium water into the bag and wait another 15 minutes.

16) Add your GloFish fluorescent fish to the aquarium
Empty the GloFish and the water in the bag into the aquarium. It is important to empty the water from the bag into the aquarium because this water contains special bacteria to help your aquarium become a healthy home for your fish.

17) Install the Lid on the aquarium
Position the lid on the aquarium and route the air line through one of the notches in the back of the lid. The hole on the top front of the lid can be used for feeding the fish. Keeping the lid on the tank will help to maintain a constant temperature in the aquarium and keep the fish from jumping out.
Congratulations! Your aquarium is now set up. For the best viewing of your GloFish®, turn on the blue and/or purple GloKit lights in a dark room.
